Architect: DSP Architecture
Register for similar homesThis outstanding two-bedroom detached house is newly completed to a design by DSP Architecture (formerly Douglas Stephen & Partners). It is notable for its dramatic sweeping roof, elegant combination of interior materials and exceptional standard of finish.
The Glasshouse demonstrates a highly intelligent response to its site, turning its back on the London Underground railway line to the rear, and taking the majority of its natural light from spectacular full-height glazing at the front. It is built on the site of a former garden belonging to the next-door property.
The ground floor contains a kitchen, which sits beneath the mezzanine, and a double-volume dining area beneath the curved, ash-lined roof. Upstairs is the reception room, which has a glass balcony to the front. The lower floor contains a generous master bedroom, a second double bedroom, a bathroom and a shower room. The bedrooms are naturally lit and ventilated by clerestory windows incorporated into the pavement-level planters. The house has a small area of outside space that wraps around it on three sides.
DSP Architecture was formed in 1993, in succession to the original practice founded in 1954 by Douglas Stephen. The firm was responsible for the design of some of London’s most significant apartment buildings in the 1960s, including Corringham in Bayswater, The Mount in Kensington and Southwood Park in Highgate.
Of The Glasshouse, the architects say, “A palette of complimentary materials – stock brick, zinc, ash, glass
and render – blur the boundaries between interior and exterior and
provide this bijoux home with a warm glow.”
The Glasshouse is located within a very short walk of Earl’s Court Underground station (Piccadilly and District lines), offering convenient access to the West End, as well as to High Street Kensington, South Kensington, Sloane Square and Notting Hill Gate. Knightsbridge is also within easy reach, and open space can be found at Holland Park and Hyde Park.
