Located in Brighton’s West Hill Conservation Area, this three-bedroom garden apartment effortlessly melds old and new. Its classic townhouse façade sits in pleasing contrast to the contemporary spaces within, which have been carefully reimagined under the eye of an interior designer; recent interventions include beautiful handmade joinery by Wood Works. At the rear is a private and leafy garden with plenty of space for outdoor dining and entertaining. The apartment sits just off Seven Dials and is within easy walking distance of the beach (just 15 minutes’ walk) and of Brighton’s mainline station, where trains run to London Victoria in under an hour.
The Tour
The building was constructed in the early 1840s and lies within the West Hill Conservation Area. Set behind a cast-iron gate, the apartment is accessed via a private entrance that leads through to a porch. The apartment has been reappointed with a considered roster of Farrow and Ball paints, establishing a refined yet soothing feel throughout.
Underfloor heating runs throughout the apartment. The smart kitchen is formed of pale grey Shaker cabinetry and a quartz Caesarstone worktop with a microcement splash-back. There are integrated Neff appliances, a boiling water tap over the sink and a large breakfast bar with enough space for four chairs. A living area occupies the front of the room, where a wide, tripartite bay window overlooks the garden beyond.
The main bedroom is at the front of the plan and has solid oak built-in wardrobes running along one wall, with handles from Dowsing and Reynolds. There are two further bedrooms, one of which is currently used a study and has direct access to the garden.
The family bathroom has been renovated by the current owners to include a modern freestanding bath. The space has porcelain finishes and terrazzo tiles from Mandarin Stone. There is also a separate shower room, with a walk-in shower and a Crittall-style black framed shower screen.
Outdoor Space
Surrounded by mature trees, the garden is bounded by two flint stone walls and has a timber-decked patio with plenty of space for outside dining. An AstroTurf lawn stretches to the back of the garden and there are teeming hydrangeas beds and ivy climbers. There is also a handy outside tap.
The Area
Dyke Road runs just off Seven Dials, a much-loved spot in the city that epitomises its carefree and relaxed character. Brighton’s beach is around a 15-minute walk from the apartment, with its Grade II*-listed pier just beyond.

The Flour Pot Bakery is a local favourite for bread, pastries and coffee, while local favourite Stoney Point is known for brilliant homemade cakes, jams and chutneys. As far as restaurants go, Brighton offers a range of cuisines that cater for every budget; Dilsk is an elegant fine-dining experience with an impressive tasting menu, while Embers excels at wood-fired cooking.
As far as shopping is concerned, Brighton has plenty to offer. There is the North Laine and The Lanes, two areas with the same name but distinctive characters. The North Laine is closest to Dyke Road and has a lively atmosphere as well as colourful terrace houses and charming independent shops. The Lanes sit next to the seafront and are famed for their vintage jewellery shops.
There are several fantastic cultural institutions in the city including the Brighton Museum, which is known for its particularly eclectic collection. The spectacular Grade I-listed Royal Pavilion was built for George IV and is now host to a changing programme of exhibitions and beautiful gardens.
